Vision and Goals

The Scripps Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC) seeks to make SIO the world leader in the understanding, conservation, and management of global marine biodiversity and a model for excellence in interdisciplinary education and research in marine biodiversity and conservation.

Goals

Investigation: Assess the state of marine ecosystems now and in the past and develop predictive models for the future

Education: Train new marine biodiversity and conservation scientists in the United States and around the world

Integration: Develop novel interdisciplinary approaches linking the biological, physical, social and informatic sciences

Communication: Increase public understanding of scientific issues and provide sound scientific analyses to policy makers

Application: Design technically sophisticated, regionally appropriate strategies to prevent and reverse biodiversity collapse

Investigation priorities (top)

  • Indicators for total marine biodiversity and ecosystem health for several marine ecosystems

  • Reliable estimates of global marine biodiversity and patterns of extinction

  • Evaluation of the status and map the marine ecoregions of the world

  • A model that links biodiversity, ecosytem services and human health

  • Evaluation of the cost effectiveness of alternatives from the perspective of biology, economics and policy

Education priorities (top)

  • Establish a curriculum linking the physical, biological and social sciences

  • Provide five 5-year fellowships in marine biodiversity and conservation offered annually

  • Provide five one-1 year fellowships in marine biodiversity and conservation for students from developing countries offered annually

  • Provide two 2-year postdoctoral fellowships in marine biodiversity and conservation offered annually

Integration priorities (top)

  • Sponsor periodic workshops bringing together scientists from diverse disciplines and careers to create novel solutions for marine environmental problems

  • Establish a sabbatical program for professionals in other fields to work with Scripps scientists

Communication priorities (top)

  • A website that is routinely used by students, professionals, and the public

  • A summer program for training students in communication skills

  • A series of movies and shorter films about marine biodiversity for the public

Application priorities

  • Strong partnerships with leading NGOs for linking science and policy

  • Priorities for marine conservation at global and regional scales defined

  • Networks of marine reserves designed for several of the marine biodiversity hotspots and priority regions

  • Large scale restoration ecology projects

CMBC seeks to remedy the impact that humans have on marine ecosystems and, in turn, help the oceans continue to feed employ, and nourish humans and all life on Earth.
