IGERT:  Interdisciplinary Research and Training for UCSD PhD students

Global Change, Marine Ecosystems and Society

Global change is a defining issue of our times, with profound consequences for human society and the environment. This NSF funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) award supports graduate training in Global Change, Marine Ecosystems, and Society. The project combines the world-class climate research program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with the economic, legal, business, policy, and historical perspectives represented by the diverse UCSD departments (Economics, History, Anthropology, Sociology) Rady School of Managment, the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UCSD sustainability Solution Institute and Climate Institute, the management-based research of NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center, and the non-profit Environmental Law Institute.  NSF IGERT Proposal 0903551(pdf)

Effective marine conservation and the implications of global change demand interdisciplinary understanding.  In response to this need, our graduate research and training will produce a generation of scientists conversant in the biological, social, economic, cultural and political issues of marine conservation and equipped with management and communication skills. Our goal is to train professionals who not only can identify the problems, but who can also find practical solutions within ecological, social and economic constraints.
