Brief bio
After a 2nd grade curriculum segment on whales, it was very clear to me that studying them was what I wanted to do with my life. I feel lucky to have been able to pursue my passion this far and am very excited to be continuing my education at Scripps. I received my B.S. from Tufts University outside of Boston where I majored in Biology and Environmental Studies. While there, I had the priveledge to be advised by Dr. Philip Starks while I conducted independent research on cetacean distribution and relative abundance on Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. After graduating, I worked as the Voyage Coordinator for Ocean Alliance, an NGO operating a 5-year long global voyage to assess man-made toxins in the marine environment through the collection of sperm whale biopsy samples. I then received the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to help Gabriella de Tezanos Pinto with her field work on population genetics of bottlenose dolphins. Working there was a wonderful experience and I decided to travel the long way home, spending time in Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Europe. Upon returning back to the states, I helped with the teaching of introductory biology lab and lecture courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I look forward to combining my interests in biological oceanography, conservation, and international policy through participation in the IGERT program.
