Brief Bio:
Brian grew up in San Diego, where he developed a passion for the ocean at an early age. His desire to increase his knowledge of coral reefs led himto Hawaii, where he received a bachelor's degree in marine science from the University of Hawaii, Hilo. Shortly after graduation, he began working
as a research biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Honolulu. His work and interests lie with studying coral reef fishes,
which he has studied while participating in a number of research cruises throughout the Indo-Pacific. He is also interested in exploring and
studying deep coral reefs, to depths of 200-500 feet. He is a graduate of the CMBC Masters of Advanced Studies Program in Marine Biodiversity and
Conservation and has returned to SIO to pursue a Ph.D. Recently he participated on National Geographic expeditions to document the coral reef
ecosystems of the southern Line Islands and Cocos Island, Costa Rica where his role was to collect, identify and quantify the fish assemblages of
these remote islands. He plans to apply his knowledge and experiences to the development of sustainable fisheries management throughout the
Pacific.
