The Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is a hub for interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and protecting our planet.

ABOUT CMBC

What we do

RESEARCH & Initiatives

To maintain a diverse and sustainable ocean, CMBC researchers develop knowledge and solutions for coupled socio-environmental marine systems. Our research is solutions focused, driven by local and global needs, and informed by the interests and expertise of our members.

We have a number of initiatives spearheaded by CMBC and support and amplify efforts by our members and affiliates.

CURRENT RESEARCH & INITIATIVES

EDUCATION

CMBC develops, administers, and supports cutting edge training programs that give students essential tools to tackle our planet's biggest challenges. We provide both conceptual training and essential hands-on practice to develop students into “boundary-spanners” who can work amongst and across disciplines.

Students are also critical members of our research community participating at all stages of our programs and initiatives. All UC San Diego students interested in marine biodiversity and conservation are invited to join CMBC and participate in our activities and events - regardless of if you are enrolled in one of our affiliated degree programs or classes.

PROGRAMS, COURSES, AND STUDENT RESOURCES

OUTREACH

We believe exchange and access activities reinforce a culture of learning and action, benefiting our institutions, our human community, our ocean, and our planet. We open the doors of the university and the research community to society at large through public events, short courses, and outreach.
